Surfers lovingly named it the “Hard Rock Island”, pointing at the island’s and numerous riff’s main quality of being made out of black lava stone. Already 20 Million years back began the island’s history with the first volcanic eruptions at sea bottom. Geographically Fuerteventura is situated, as the most eastern island of the archipelago, roughly 100km in front of the African coastline in the Atlantic Ocean, more or less at level with the Sahara.
This climatic privileged location guarantees soothing warm temperatures all year round, which, especially in winter, plays into the hands of us middle Europeans with an agreeable flight time of only 4.5 hours. Temperatures almost never fall beneath 20° Celsius, even in the cold times of the year, and an amazing 3,000 hours of sun a year comfort visitor and locals.
